„DO ŚË SÅJD” - is the newest CD album of a Polish jazz vocalist, Alicja Serowik, which is inspired by polish folk songs from the Kurpie region, where she was born. It is a continuation of an EP that she recorded in march 2016. Alicja decided to explore her cultural origins even further and to take her listeners into a new dimension – a world full of romance and nostalgy, so characteristic for Kurpie folklore. There are 11 tracks in this CD album, ten of which are based on traditional folk songs and one is an original composition by Michał Ciesielski. All songs are arranged in modern, contemporary jazz style. Alicja has invited some talented polish jazz musicians to record with her: Michał Ciesielski on piano, Krzysztof Słomkowski on double-bass, Arek Czernysh on accordion, Adam Golicki on drums, and Bonsai string quartet. The greatest challange was to combine the sublime melancholy and austerity so typical for Kurpie melodies with the freedom and creativity of jazz music. This collective managed to fuse those two in their music and present it in 11 different musical images.
Alicja Serowik - charismatic jazz vocalist born in Poland. In music looking for moving melody, sublime harmony, beauty, unpredictability and freedom of speech. Thats where her love of jazz comes from. She is inspired by widely understood improvised music, with elements of sonorism and also folk music from the region she comes from. Th main area in her vocals, is space of sounds created here and now. Her great focus is on treating her voice instrumentally, searching for unconventional sounds and implementing techniques. A big highlight she puts is also breathing techniques, and exploring new sounds, whilst trying to develop her creativity in new forms. She is not scared of using her voice in an unconventional way when improvising. In her music you can hear slavic temperament with european inspirations. The main characteristic in her artistry is the no difference between the singer and the musicians in the band. Having a deep, crystal clear, nostalgic vocal artist transitioning in the intriguing way between singing, whispering and using silence as a form of her expresion. |
